When Hedi Slimane re-branded the Yves Saint Laurent ready-to-wear collection as Saint Laurent Paris, a reference to the labels mid-60’s history, the reaction was surprisingly mixed. “It is interesting to see how much reaction this retro branding has created,” Slimane told Vanity Fair. “Clearly, this period of the history of the house was not well-known, which I trust was a surprise for Pierre Bergé. I went back to 1966 – just before the events of 1968 [when 11 million workers went on strike against the conservative politics of then-President Charles de Gaulle], but the awakening of youth was in the air, and Yves Saint Laurent wanted to dissociate himself from the clientele of haute couture and embrace this new generation.”
Worried that the houses classic YSL logo will be replaced shoppers are buying up the last of the ready-to-wear collections. But the fate of the iconic logo is unclear. The company’s official name has not changed and the Daily Mail has reported that the famous signature will remain unaltered on accessories and cosmetics. According to Saint Laurent’s press office the new brand identity is as follows… the company is still named Yves Saint Laurent, the ready-to-wear collection should be referred to as Saint Laurent, the logo and visual identity of the ready-to-wear will read Saint Laurent Paris, and the name of the collections in photo credits and quotes should read Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimanie – simple, no?
If the YSL label is not long for this world does that make it a wise investment? Will the pre-Slimanie pieces increase in value? Yes says Milton Pedraza, CEO of research and consulting firm the Luxury Institute, to Businessweek. “YSL is making the change in a surgical way,” he says. “They will reinterpret the classics. So yes, the classics will sell for more with a certain group of people.” So if you fall into the category of ‘certain people’ it’s time to start shopping. Yves Saint Laurent is still available at a store near you, while supplies last.

Will the mens stuff be worth as much as the womens? Assuming it does actually increase in value.
