BALL’s new AeroGMT Sled Driver honors legendary USAF pilot Major Brian Shul. A Vietnam-era attack pilot, he flew over 200 combat missions before being shot down near the end of the war. Major Shul was so severely burned he was given little chance of survival, and next to no change of flying again. He overcame near-fatal injuries and returned to full flight status, ultimately piloting the SR-71 Blackbird with a titanium pin in his finger and nerves of steel. Dubbed “The Sled” by pilots, the supersonic SR-71 spy plane was the fasted and highest-flying aircraft the world has ever seen.
Inspired by Major Shul’s tenacity, the limited-edition AeroGMT Sled Driver is ultra-tough and extremely bright. Its curved sapphire bezel shines with micro gas lights for perfect 24-hour GMT reading in absolute darkness. Micro gas tubes also illuminate the dial’s hour, minute and second hands/indices – without the need for charging. A protective plate covers the crown to shield it from external knocks and ensures it remains properly tightened. Designed to welcome Major Shul into the BALL Explorers Club, the 42-mm stainless steel case features a titanium case-back engraved with the Blackbird’s emblem and the individual edition number of each watch.
