Land’s End Menswear Slims Down

Land’s End developed a loyal following by offering well made, reasonably priced basics and allowing customers to return any item at any time for any reason – that’s why your grandmother shops there. In an effort to attract younger fashion focused customers Land’s End launched Canvas 1963 in 2009. The aesthetic is classic prep style with a slimmer fit and contemporary palette. The name is a reference to the brands origins as a sailboat equipment company in 1963 in Chicago, Illinois.

Canvas has been a success. So much so that the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Land’s End is planning to expand its range of slimmer fitting options into its main line. In an effort to appeal to a wider customer base the new silhouette will not be called “slim-fit.” Instead Land’s End will use the term “tailored fit.” The newly proportioned pants, knits, T-shirts and suits will be available in stores and online this fall.

This news comes at a critical time for the company. Sears bought Land’s End in 2002 for $2 billion and is reportedly interested in selling or spinning off the brand. Despite reporting an unexpected first-quarter profit Sears continues to struggle. So far this has not affected Land’s End’s culture of quality, value and customer service. Here’s to hoping it lasts.

  1. this line is cut very slim especially if old school lands end fans. you need to order one or two sizes up.

  2. The new lands end stuff is a big improvement from what they were carrying. The prices are still good but it is not in any stores.
