The First OMEGA in Space is back in production. More than 60 years ago, astronaut Walter Schirra completed a historic space mission wearing his personal Speedmaster. His soon-to-be-famous watch was a 2nd generation Speedmaster first released in 1959. Originally identified by its reference number, CK 2998, the watch was distinguished by its symmetrical case, slender Alpha hands, and dark bezel.
This year’s Speedmaster Anniversary Series follows the mid-century styling of the 2nd generation model, with a symmetrical 39.70-mm case in polished/brushed stainless steel. The black aluminum bezel ring sports a tachymeter scale with the “Dot Over Ninety” graphic synonymous with the earliest Speedmasters. Beneath a retro-style doomed sapphire crystal, Omega included hour markers and hour/minute Alpha hands filled with vintage Super-LumiNova – all set on a blue-grey dial that replicates the tone of some 1960s CK 2998 watches. The watch also features two vintage Omega logos, one on the dial and another on the crown, along with an engraved seahorse medallion on the stainless steel caseback.
Omega gave the re-edition an engine upgrade. Each of this year’s three new models are powered by a Swiss made Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, the latest version of the Calibre 321 that powered Walter Schirra’s Speedmaster.
