During WWII the US Naval Construction Battalions, aka the Navy Seabees, gained fame for their ability to build anything, anywhere, under any conditions. To complete their projects the battalions worked closely with Caterpillar Inc., the world’s largest construction-equipment manufacturer. This bit of history inspired Nigel Cabourn’s AW22 collaboration with CAT Footwear. Cabourn named his designs after two of the beaches stormed on D-Day, beaches cleared using Caterpillar machinery. The Utah ($260) is rooted in Cat’s construction and workwear heritage, complete with protective steel toe and a goodyear welt. Available in Black with camo accents or Brown, the uppers feature a canvas quarter panel and hairy suede vamp with full grain leather mud and toe guards. The Omaha ($225) is Cabourn’s interpretation of a 1940s US Navy boot, with a canvas high-top, molded rubber toe cap and full grain leather mudguard. Finishing touches include heavy-duty laces, metal hardware, branded lace keeps and rugged soles. Available in Dijon and Black.
