John Smedley & The Campaign For Wool Focus On Sustainability With New Collab

John Smedley produces all of its knitwear in the UK using natural fibers. Wool has been a cornerstone of this production for over 200 years. So, to mark The Campaign for Wool’s 2022 Wool Month, John Smedley created the Cornwall sweater, a fisherman-style knit made exclusively from British wool. Launched in 2010 by Charles III, then Duke of Cornwall, The Campaign works to raise the profile of wool as a sustainable and scalable fiber suitable for manufacturing. The wool used to make the sweater came from sheep reared by tenant farmers on lands owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. From farm to finished sweater the wool traveled just 300 miles. The fleeces are left undyed, reducing the carbon footprint and allowing subtle variations in the fibers to come through – no two sweaters are the same. The result is ‘a chunky 5-gauge knit that has a rustic feel more akin to outerwear,’ says Pip Jenkins, John Smedley’s Design Director, ‘making it perfect for the coldest months of the year.’
