After kicking off their partnership with 2021’s Connected x Super Mario Limited Edition, TAG Heuer and Nintendo are back at it with the Formula 1 x Mario Kart Limited Editions. TAG’s designed team worked closely with Nintendo to customize every detail of the mechanical timepieces, even adding a few Mario Kart Easter eggs.
Limited to 3,000 pieces, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 x Mario Kart Limited Edition Chronograph ($4,300.00) comes in a 44-mm steel case with a black ceramic tachymeter bezel, an M for Mario etched into the crown, and the Mario Kart logo engraved on the steel case back. On the dial, three asphalt textured sub-counters – with Mario appearing in the 9 o’clock seconds indicator circled in red – top a grey and black checkered racing flag pattern. ‘Mario red’ is also used on the lacquered central hand, hour chronograph counter hand and 60-second scale on the flange. And for all the Mario superfans, the date window at 3 o’clock will regularly insert Mario Kart characters and sprites in lieu of the date.
The TAG Heuer Formula 1 x Mario Kart Limited Edition Chronograph Tourbillon ($25,600.00), is the haute horlogerie piece of this drop. Limited to just 250 pieces, its slightly larger 45-mm case is made of grade 5 titanium. The exhibition case back showcases TAG Heuer’s Calibre Heuer 02T movement with a red column wheel and custom winding rotor featuring profiles of Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach in their karts. The watches edition number is engraved in the titanium case back, above the Mario Kart logo printed on the sapphire crystal. Mario Kart also appears on the polished black ceramic bezel, alongside a tachymeter scale measuring up to 400 km/h. A skeletonized black dial with red lines framing the cutouts draws attention to the gearwheel at 12 o’clock, chronograph sub-counters at 3 and 9 o’clock, and the tourbillon at 6 o’clock. TAG redesigned the tourbillon cage to highlight Mario, the Spiny Shell and Bullet Bill moving in rhythm with the complication.
Both watches have specially embossed black leather straps with contrasting red stitching. The folding buckle – made of steel on the chronograph and titanium on the tourbillon – is also customized with the Mario’s M symbol. They will be presented in special edition black watch boxes with matching travel pouches.
