I got involved with Nike in the beginning because we wanted to make a sculpture that everyone could wear – Tom Sachs
After 10 years of high concept collaborations, Nike and Tom Sachs are switching focus. The provocative contemporary artist designed the new NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe to be distinctly plain, an ‘ordinary shoe for extraordinary people.’ The launch version, the Studio, features muted white uppers with a slightly upturned toe, blue donning straps and a gum rubber midsole. Despite the pared-back silhouette, it took the Tom Sachs Studio team ‘a decade to make a shoe this simple, as simple as can be and no simpler. NikeCraft shuns innovation for its own sake, but embraces it as a necessity,’ according to Sachs. Stain it, tear it, repair it, ‘they’re meant to do all the things that you do and tell your story.’
