With just a few days to go before the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, TAG Heuer introduces an all black edition of the principalities namesake chronograph. Made of black-coated titanium, this year’s Monaco Special Edition channels a version of the watch released in the late 1970s – with a matte black dial and case – nicknamed ‘Dark Lord’ by collectors and enthusiasts. The diamond-like carbon coatings on the 39-mm case is sandblasted to produced a grained finish. This is only the second titanium version of the Monaco, and the first made of DLC-coated titanium. Advances in coatings now allow DLC to be used not only on the case, but also on the crown, pushers and case-back. The deep black dial sets off rose gold markers, hour and minute hands, as well as the rich red chronograph and seconds hands. The sandblasted outer dial creates a grained finish reminiscent of the grip on F1 tracks. Inside, the Heuer 02 movement produces an 80-hour power reserve. Finished with a rose gold-plated oscillating mass, the movement is visible through the sapphire case-back.
