Seiko is expanding The Black Series with four new watches inspired by night diving. Three of the watches are modern interpretations of landmark designs from the 1960s and 70s, including Seiko’s first diver. Stylistically, the 1965 Mechanical Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation (SPB253J1) stays true to the first diving watch made in Japan – a self-winding 150m Seiko. The 1968 Mechanical Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation (SPB255J1) retains the silhouette of the original – a groundbreaking diver with 300m water resistance and a 10-beat automatic movement – in a slightly smaller 42mm steel case. Finally, the 1970 Mechanical Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation (SPB257J1) pays tribute to the watch worn by adventurer Naomi Uemura between 1974 to 1976 when he completed a 12,500km solo dog-sled run from Greenland to Alaska. While maintaining the case form of the original, the water resistance has been increased from 150m to 200m and the crystal has been upgraded to sapphire glass. Powered by Seiko’s 6R35 automatic movement, all three watches are limited to 5,500 pieces.
