Ulysse Nardin introduced a high concept version of its Moonstruck astronomical complication. The Blast Moonstruck is the latest celestial watch inspired by the Trilogy of Time series, a trio of watches created by master watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin in the 1980s. His new design has indications for phases of the Moon, the position of the Sun, tides, dual time and world time, inside a 45-mm case made of black ceramic and black DLC coated titanium. A domed sapphire crystal in the center of the watch sits inside a larger sapphire crystal box encircled by a gold ring engraved with a calendar. This setting gives the map etched into the underside of the crystal a three-dimensional appearance. Time is read from the position of the Super-LumiNova filled sword-shaped hour and minute hands, there is no chapter ring. Learning to read the indications takes more that a few minutes, but ultimately Oechslin’s audacious design is intuitive – even for a novice with no knowledge of astronomy.
