IWC Schaffhausen designed and donated four space-themed Pilot’s Watch Chronographs to support Inspiration4, the world’s first all-civilian orbital mission. The watches will be worn by Inspiration4’s crew during a multi-day journey in low-Earth orbit before being auctioned as part of the mission’s aim to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Each Inspiration4 Chronograph features a specially engineered white ceramic case surroundings a dark blue dial dotted with ‘stars’ and three sub-dials – a sweeping split seconds hand, a 30-minute and 12-hour counter. The Inspiration4 logo appears in the sub-dial at 6 o’clock and again on the titanium case back, along with each crew members name. IWC’s in-house 69380 caliber chronograph movement powers the watches. The chronographs are fitted with a white rubber strap with a leather inlay.
Inspiration4 is set to takeoff in September from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The spacecraft will orbit the planet at an altitude of approximately 357 miles (575 km) and a speed of more than 17,500 miles per hour (27,360 kph). After the multi-day journey, the crew will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere for a soft water landing off the coast of Florida.
