In 1975 Seiko introduced a dive watch inside a bulging monocoque case with a special gasket that eliminated the need for a helium valve. The ‘Tuna’ diver was an instant hit with amateurs and pros alike. In 1986 the Japanese watchmaker stepped up its game, upgrading the ‘75 design with a new quartz movement – delivering an accuracy no mechanical diver’s watch could match – and improved water resistance to 1,000 meters for saturation diving. The distinctive Tuna silhouette is still Seiko’s most recognizable design. To mark the 35th anniversary of the ’86 model, Seiko is reissuing the 1,000m Tuna.
The Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition keeps the spirit of the mid-70s design while upgrading the features and professional specs. Equipped with Seiko’s 7C46 quartz movement, it still has the 1000m water resistance and helium resistance that saturation diving requires. The new gradient dial – fitted with luminous hands and markers – changes from blue to black, mimicking the way light gradually fades on decent. The familiar one-piece titanium case with its outer protection structure delivers exceptional shock resistance. A vivid yellow ‘lock’ sign and arrow on the crown combined with a yellow winding stem make it easy to ensure the crown is locked before a dive. Available in a limited edition of 1,200 pieces, the watch comes with two extra strength silicone straps.
