Multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams’ work includes painting, sculpture, sound installations and a unicorn pool float with a rainbow mane. His Floater series – created between 2016 and 2020 – explores how leisure becomes both an act of pleasure and a form of activism when embraced by African Americans in “white spaces.” Using paintings and pool accessories Adams depicts leisure as an act of radical joy. The Vilebrequin x Derrick Adams collaboration adapts the series, creating an original print for a new swim trunk ($295.00) and tote bag ($95.00). Set against a vivid turquoise field, black figures lounge playfully on citron, magenta and lime swans, ducks and a rainbow-maned unicorn with a gold tooth and matching chain.
The collaboration is the finale of the Adams’ Floater series. To mark the occasion, Vilebrequin will be donating $20,000 to the Eubie Blake Cultural Center in the artist’s hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. Their mission is to create an inclusive space by developing and promoting cultural and educational programs programs for young people, adults and seniors.
