Bremont honors the life and work of theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author Stephen Hawking with the brands 10th limited edition watch collection. Co-Founders Nick and Giles English worked with the Hawking family to create a completely unique collection, incorporating wood from Professor Hawking’s desk and pieces of a meteorite – to symbolize the cosmos. Bremont will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the collection to the Stephen Hawking Foundation, which supports research into cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics.
The four piece Bremont Hawking Limited Edition Collection includes a 41 mm chronometer available in stainless steel, rose gold and white gold, along with a 34 mm ladies watch set with 93 diamonds. Only 388 stainless steel ($9,995), 88 rose gold ($22,495) and 88 white gold ($23,495) pieces will be made; the numbers reference the year Hawking’s “Brief History of Time” was published, 1988. The classically styled watches feature a retrograde seconds hand at the bottom of the dial and grand date dial at 12 o’clock.
Bremont used wood taken from the desk where Stephen Hawking contemplated the mysteries of the universe to produce the four wooden discs inlaid into the back of each watch. Professor Hawking inherited the desk from his grandmother, it was one of his most treasured possessions. These unique chronometers also contain pieces of meteorite that can be seen at the center of the case backs, alongside an etching of stars from the night sky in Oxford on 8th January 1942, the date that Hawking was born. The watch’s serial number is printed on paper from original copies of a 1979 research paper exploring the thermal properties of black holes – light reading. In an effort to reduce the products carbon footprint, Bremont reduced the size of the box and amount of packaging used to deliver the watches. It did not compromise the quality of the packing. Each Hawking Limited Edition timepiece is presented in an English bridle leather satchel handmade in Manchester.
