Snow Peak Introduces Slow Fashion Yamai Line

Snow Peak was originally found in 1958 under the name Yamai Shoten when Yukio Yamai, an accomplished mountaineer, decided to create his own line of climbing gear out of frustration with the poor quality and design of the gear available. Six decades later Snow Peak is known for creating legacy-grade climbing gear and outdoor apparel in a minimalist style, and using artisanal techniques to shape its cast iron, titanium and stainless steel products. In 2014 Yukio’s granddaughter, Lisa Yamai, joined Snow Peak to lead the development and design of its first ever apparel line. Her performance apparel won praise for balancing function and style using a mix of natural and highly technical fabrics.

This year Lisa Yamai launches another apparel line for Snow Peak, applying the same philosophy of minimalist design and quality production, but this time to a small batch collection of one-of-a-kind garments. A reaction to fast fashion and scalability, the Yamai Line makes clothes slowly utilizing the skills of craftspeople around the world – from Japan, Peru, West Bengal and the Bihar Region of Nepal. Using natural, woven fabrics tinted with ink and mud dyeing techniques, Yamai cuts her unisex garments loose, to drape with ease and flatter a variety of shapes and sizes.

The Yamai Line is available now in limited quantities at snowpeak.com.
