In 1909 New Orleans haberdasher Joesph Haspel Sr., recognized the potential of seersucker – until then a workaday fabric – to make slacks and blazers suited to the heat and humidity of New Orleans. Haspel’s lightweight, low-maintenance seersucker suits were a hit with southern businessmen. By the 1950s the fabric was a staple of Ivy League style, with students in the Northeast sporting blue, pink, yellow and red seersucker blazers and slacks. Haspel has defined Crescent City style ever since.
Now, Haspel is teaming up with NOLA Couture, another New Orleans native, on a collection that celebrates the vibrant culture and whimsical style of Louisiana. The 18-piece Haspel x NOLA Couture capsule features silk ties, pocket squares and bow ties covered with images of sugarcane, strawberries, magnolias, catfish, pelicans and the Cajun Holy Trinity (aka onions, celery and bell peppers – the key ingredients in all Cajun dishes). Designed to coordinate with Haspel’s seersucker suits, the silks come in navy, light blue, pink, lavender, yellow and red.
