As part of its 160th anniversary celebrations Sunspel invited John Booth to explore the companies extensive archive and create a limited edition collection using his instantly recognisable color technique. The London-based ceramicist, illustrator and visual artist said he jumped at the opportunity to make his “dream version of a Sunspel shirt.” Inspired by the companies 1950s Sun and Clouds logo, Booth turned the archival graphic into a vibrant line of embroidered, color blocked and printed T-shirts, sweatshirts, polos, boxers and swim shorts. All of the swim shorts are manufactured using Sequal, a polyester yarn made from recycled materials including post consumer plastic bottles and plastic recovered from the oceans.
“I think what people have said to me that I’m quite interested in, is that maybe me working with Sunspel wouldn’t have been an obvious choice but I really like that and I think in my career the projects that I’ve enjoyed the most have been with companies that might have been the less obvious choice for me. But you get so much more out of it because I think you can make something that is quite unique for me and quite unique for them” – John Booth.
