PUMA partnered with the BA Fashion course at Central Saint Martins to explore, test and refine sustainable textile manufacturing techniques. The results became the new PUMA x CSM collection. The footwear, apparel and accessories in the CSM capsule use “Dope Dye” and digital printing to reduce the amount of chemicals and water used in the manufacturing process. PUMA is testing the techniques with the collaboration before rolling out the technology in other products
“Dope Dye” eliminates a step in the dyeing process, using less energy, water and chemicals than conventional wet processing. Digitally printing logos directly onto fabric also helps reduce waste and chemical use. With these initiatives PUMA could reduced water consumption in the manufacturing process by up to 17 percent. The CSM designs are made using cotton from the Better Cotton Initiative, significantly reducing the water used in producing the raw materials for the collection. In 2019, PUMA saved more than 13 billion liters of water by using BCI cotton in its products, which is equivalent to 200 million showers.
