In the 1930s electronic instruments began to replace dashboard navigation chronometers in aircraft. With their function in aviation largely replaced, modern pilot watches offered chronometers and other aviation functions as horological complications. Breitling’s Avenger line takes this idea a step further with aviation functions pilots can use in flight. The rugged bezel and special grip-pattern on the crown of the Avenger Automatic GMT 45 Night Mission Sand can be easily operated wearing flight gloves. The watch features a sturdy 45mm DLC-coated titanium case mounted on a sand-colored military leather strap. Inside, a black dial decorated with Super-LumiNova® coated Arabic numerals – a nod to the stenciled numbers used on the decks of aircraft carriers – has an additional red hand indicating a second time zone. The Breitling 32 self-winding mechanical movement has an impressive 42 hour power reserve.
