Designer Yuki Matsuda built Monitaly’s reputation on smart, idiosyncratic revisions of familiar styles — lots of American military and workwear influences with a healthy dose of woodland camo and cheetah print. Matsuda’s collections are not revolutionary, each season is a subtle re-calibration of past designs with new fabrications, shapes and non-Western cuts evolving over multiple seasons. Monitaly’s Fall/Winter 2019 offering has everything you expect – combinations of Chinese workwear and U.S. Navy details – with some variations on the brands standard themes – 40s Harlem Jazz musicians, 80s New Romantic fashions, and 90s outerwear.
