Pringle of Scotland Mackintosh Inspired Knits

In the late 1890s Glasgow’s preeminence in shipbuilding, engineering and industrial machinery lead to growth in secondary industries like textiles, pottery, garment and furniture manufacturing. The wealth generated by these business funded a vibrant creative community and the construction of many of the city’s architectural masterpieces. One of these landmarks was the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) building commissioned in 1896 and designed by the ‘father of Glasgow Style’ Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Scottish architect and designer achieved international acclaim by creating some of the most important Art Nouveau buildings and interiors of the early 20th century. The GSA building, Mackintosh’s masterwork, deftly combined modernity and romanticism and is considered the first original example of Art Nouveau architecture in Great Britain. Later in his career Mackintosh moved to London to design textiles before creating a series of well-regarded watercolors.

The intricate designs and painterly patterns of Mackintosh’s later work, combined with the simplicity of his early work inspired the bold geometric patters and argyle diamonds of Pringle’s Autumn/Winter 2019 collection.
