J.Crew has a way of tweaking preppy staples just enough to bring them into modern focus. For their first-ever Pre-Fall collection the retailer shot model Nicolas Ripoll on New York’s Shelter Island in gently rumpled shirts, cozy cashmere and on-point chinos made for late summer, when the weather teeters between sunny days and cool nights. The casual influence of the sea and sun was subtle, appearing in the softly faded, perfectly imperfect color of a garment dyed hoodie, broken-in chinos, and a cable knit cotton cardigan with a contrast shawl (inspired by a popular style from J.Crew’s archives) over a button collar chambray shirt made with organic cotton. Of all the layering options on offer, the broken-in four-pocket trucker jacket, lightweight cashmere sweaters and unstructured cotton-linen suit jackets are best suited for cooler days in any season.
