British heritage meets contemporary design in Margaret Howell’s new collaboration with Fred Perry. Inspired by original tennis pieces from the Fred Perry archive, Howell created a monochrome collection with crisp, modern interpretations of the 1950’s M3 Fred Perry Shirt, 50s tennis bomber, and Hughes tennis shoe. Howell also designed straight leg cotton twill trousers meant to be rolled up at the hem. Inspired by an original tennis short and tailoring styles from Margaret Howell’s mainline collection, the trousers have buttoned adjusters on the waistband – a detail specific to tennis shorts – and Laurel Wreath embroidery on the back pocket.
Howell hopes customers will “see the suitability of the connection [between the brands]. One of the influences on my clothes’ design is sportswear because my clothes have to function for an active working person in the same way sportswear has to be fit for purpose. Iconic brands don’t survive on style alone. Our customers recognise the importance of quality for comfort and durability as well as style.”
