With the release of his Spring/Summer 2012 collection London-based American designer Shaun Samson has two seasons under his belt. His first collection, Fall/Winter 2011-2012, was actually his graduate collection for Central Saint Martins in London. In his first collection Shaun used the little-know technique of needle punch felting to great effect. His Spring/Summer collection uses the same technique to splice panels of multicolored Mexican blankets into denim shorts and oversize shirts. For this collection Samson told Opening Ceremony the he “wanted to communicate a California attitude. My Spring/Summer 2012 collection references many things from grunge to the beach, surfing, urban street culture, and Mexico, amongst other things. The shape of the garments is really minimal which allowed the blankets to make a loud statement with their colors. I wanted the confidence of their colors to shine.”
