Espadrilles: Old School vs. New School

People have been wearing espadrilles for over 600 years. Traditional espadrilles are made with a canvas upper seamed to a jute rope sole and often have laces that wrap around the ankle to hold the shoes in place. Once peasant footwear, espadrilles became fashionable in the 1940’s and have been in and out of vogue ever since. In the 1950’s Hemingway and Picasso wore them. In the mid-1960’s Yves Saint Laurent featured espadrilles in a collection and in the 1980’s the style was revived by Don Johnson’s Miami Vice character Sonny Crockett.

A few seasons back espadrilles starting popping up in directional American collections like Simon Spurr, Steven Alan and Band of Outsiders. The current popularity of espadrilles has led to several variations on the style. From chukka boot and boat shoe-inspired versions to tasselled loafers with jute soles this summer there is something for everyone.
