The New York Times has confirmed that KAWS, aka Brian Donnelly, will create a balloon for the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. KAWS is the latest artist in the famed holiday parade’s Blue Sky Gallery series, which invites renowned artists to create “flying art” for the Thanksgiving procession. “Since 2005, contemporary art has found a new home in our legendary line-up, bringing fine art masterpieces closer to millions of spectators,” said Amy Kule, executive producer of the parade. Tom Otterness, Jeff Koons, Keith Haring and Takashi Murakami have all created balloons for the Blue Sky Gallery series.

KAWS’ character Companion will be transformed into a balloon 40 feet long and 30 feet tall. The sculpture Companion sits 16ft tall with his gloved hands covering his face in a pose that recalls Rodin’s “The Thinker.” Many New Yorkers will recognize the work which was installed at the entrance of the Standard Hotel in the meatpacking district last summer. The sculpture is now part of KAWS: The Nature Of Need at the Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong.
