Get Your Art By Art Jacobs Not Art By Kidult T-Shirts
UPDATE: The never-ending story… Parisian street artist Kidult has responded to Marc Jacobs’ response. In what Kidult is calling the “Final Ending” he has released the ‘Not Art by Kidult’ t-shirt for £6,89. Kidult’s t-shirt is a response to a Marc Jacobs t-shirt called ‘Art by Art Jacobs,’ sold exclusively at the MJ Soho store for $689. The ‘Art Jacobs’ t-shirt was a response to a tag the Kidult painted on the facade of the Marc Jacobs Soho store on May 7. The limited edition Kidult shirts are available in pink (the color of the ‘Art Jacobs’ shirt) or white from kidultone.com.
Previously…..
When this story broke there were rumors that MJ and Kidult were working together to generate press. Apparently this was just some good old fashion graffiti. What ever the case may be given the amount of press this story has generated someone at KCD should send Kidult a check.
Marc Jacobs is now selling hot pink “Art by Art Jacobs” t-shirts with a picture of the graffiti’d Soho store front. Earlier this week graffiti artist Kidult tagged the MJ Soho boutique with the word ART in hot pink letters, and tweeted a photo of his work. Kidult doesn’t seem to be pleased that his “art” is being used to sell t-shirts. He tweeted… “@MarcJacobsIntl … ??? LET’S PLAY, but we don’t play the same rules!”
The very limited edition shirts are available at the Soho store only for $689… that’s not a typo.
Marc Jacobs Soho Tagged
The Marc Jacobs store on Mercer Street was tagged on Monday night by Kidult, the graffiti artist notorious for tagging fashion stores. The Marc Jacobs’ PR team cleverly appropriated the whole episode as a branding excercise and sent out pictures of the tag by Twitter, Art by Art Jacobs, and Instagram, Art Jacobs @ Marc Jacobs Collection. For the record Kidult was the first to Tweet a picture of the tag with the message “I did some ART?”
Kidult has famously tagged Supreme, Céline, Agnès B., Colette and Kenzo. In 2011 Kidult tagged the Céline flagship store in Paris with a big “SK8,” instead of his usual KID tag, on the facade in response to their Spring ad campaign. Kidult’s is notorious for using a fire extinguisher filled with paint to create his “art.”
